How did you get into AV? When I was in high school, the local community TV channel came to our school to film a TV show. And because I was doing improv then, they asked me to host the show. I was not great at it; actually, I was pretty terrible! But in hindsight, that probably had something to do with the fact that I spent most of the day asking questions about the equipment. I wanted to know how it worked, helped with the cabling and got into the weeds of the technology. After my teacher saw my excitement, she brought me to visit a TV station, and that’s when I knew I wanted to work in television. What are you currently working on? I am a demo and training specialist at Ross Video, travelling the world and training people on the technology. I train on video switchers (Carbonite, Acuity), automated production control (Overdrive) and anything related to the news workflow. Favourite project? I had the chance to work with Servus TV/Red Bull Media on their new automated studio. We needed to control the rotating studio platform, sliding monitor wall, lights, robotic cameras, as well as all the graphics (AR, studio wall etc). The team was fantastic and the result was seriously impressive! What does the future hold for the AV industry? How did you get into AV? I found my way into AV from a background in leading UX and development teams for graphic
design agencies. Working on diverse, multifaceted applications and projects has been incredibly rewarding, keeping me committed to the industry. What are you currently working on? I’m always working on the next phase of the evolution of our Pixera media server product. We are currently laying the groundwork for an even wider spectrum of integration possibilities. Favourite project? While I’m proud of all our clients’ successes, I’m especially pleased with some of our cinema-related work, such as our contribution to the Oscar- winning film Poor Things . What does the future hold for the AV industry? I think we are all still riding a growth wave as both the potential and expectations for moving pixels everywhere continue to expand. What advice would you give to someone starting a career in AV tech? What’s great about AV is that you get to work in a dynamic environment with interesting people that are always coming up with new challenges. That can also make a job in AV demanding, though, so expect to work hard while you’re having fun.
