USED FOCUS – PANASONIC EVA1

SUPER 35 STAR

While not the latest tech, Panasonic’s cine camera creates sharp, colourful footage

P anasonic takes its time bringing out cinema off the revolutionary Micro Four Thirds AF101 – the first affordable cinema camera for independent filmmakers, costing a tenth of the flagship Varicam LT. It took another seven years for Panasonic to offer a Super 35 cinema camera at a decent price. That’s the EVA1, which took on rivals Canon, Sony and Blackmagic with a similar feature set, but also the added benefit of 10-bit 4:2:2 internal recording and dual-native ISO for low-light performance. Since then, a lot has happened. More attainable full-frame cinema cameras have arrived from Sony and Canon, plus Super 35 options from both those two powerhouse manufacturers, not to mention the likes of Red. With no signs of an upgraded cameras. Back in 2010, the company took the wraps EVA2 or even a full-frame version, the EVA1 is still the current, latest cinema cam for indie filmmakers from Panasonic. Only now it’s cheaper, still performs incredibly well and there are plenty around on the used market. On launch, it cost £7770/$7495 to get the EVA1 body. Despite rising prices globally, it’s now come down to £5799/$6495; second-hand units can be snapped up from around £2000/$2500 for a well-used version, to £3200/$3600 for mint condition. As it fits Canon EF lenses, which are available in abundance, this makes for a great buy. Especially since it’s still available new, so there are spares in case repairs are needed. And these will be in stock for many years.
