Staying out for the summer THE BEST ALFRESCO DINING EXPERIENCES ACROSS CAMBRIDGESHIRE TOP TABLES

THE PLOUGH Nestled on the banks of the Cam at Fen Ditton, The Plough boasts arguably one of the best beer gardens in the whole county. A sweeping grassy meadow inching right up to the river, it’s the perfect place to watch the world go by, pint in hand, cosying by a firepit as the sun goes down. There’s a good cask ale selection, if that’s your thing – and the Sunday roasts are top quality. THE TIVOLI It may have only been open a few months, but the drinkers, diners and crazy golfers of the city have already taken The Tivoli to their hearts. The cherry on top of this multi-level venue is a spacious roof terrace, boasting its own bar, great views across the river and a colourful mural by Cambridge artist Mr Penfold. Pitch up for the afternoon and grab a few drinks – plus a burger from Steak & Honour, which has residency in the venue’s kitchen. GARDEN HOUSE Another gorgeous riverside spot, the Garden House – forming part of the Graduate Cambridge hotel – offers an elegant alfresco experience to match its exquisite food. The pristine lawn is dotted with striped deckchairs, perfectly positioned for watching the punters drift along while quenching your thirst. Dive into an incredible cocktail list, featuring rhubarb negronis and the signature garden bar martini, laced with crème d’abricot and orange bitters. For some live entertainment, pay a visit on 25 September, when the City of Cambridge Brass Band performs.

CAFE FOY A charming riverside spot, Foy is beloved for its amazing toasties, expertly blended cocktails and a postcard-perfect setting. The location on Quayside is hard to beat if you want to be in the thick of it – this corner of the city throngs with punters and drinkers during the warm months. Pull up a mismatched chair, order yourself an Aperol spritz with something tasty to eat – and drink in the Cambridge summertime! GONVILLE HOTEL The Lawn at Gonville Hotel is a quintessentially English country garden affair, complete with lavishly decorated marquee and croquet. There’s live jazz on Friday and Saturday nights, while the menu includes indulgent fare such as truffle risotto and creamy burrata. THE SENATE If it’s dinner with a view you’re after, check out The Senate Bistro, positioned among some of the city centre’s most impressive buildings, including Senate House and Great St Mary’s Church. When the sun’s shining, you’ll feel like you’re on holiday, watching the tourists buzz around – especially once you’ve ordered a bowl of delicious calamari and a glass of fizz. DE LUCA CUCINA Overlooking Parker’s Piece, the tiny roof terrace at De Luca Cucina is another hidden gem worth seeking out. Sip on something chilled and indulge in a feast of excellent Italian food – menu favourites include seafood linguine, arancini and

caprese salads. If the weather turns, or you just fancy heading inside, check out the cocktail bar one floor up from the terrace, which has a live pianist every Friday and Saturday night. THE VARSITY Perhaps the most iconic of Cambridge’s alfresco experiences is the luxurious roof terrace at the Varsity Hotel, which offers panoramic views of the skyline. Drinks may be a bit on the pricey side, but the incredible setting and glamorous vibe more than make up for it. KOTA Run by the team behind city-centre stalwart Novi, Kota is a stylish setting at Eddington’s Turing Locke, tucked away in the north-west of the city. Outside, there’s a covered courtyard with chic furnishings, while upstairs holds the pièce de résistance – a spacious roof terrace looking out across the city. It’s a lovely spot for enjoying the bar’s botanical cocktails, freshly brewed coffee, tasty brunches or Josper-cooked chargrilled feasts.
