WORDS JULI AN M ITCHELL

“THESE MONITORS ARE FEATURE RICH AND BUILT FOR THE JOB. ESPECIALLY FOR ON-SET GRADING”

VC’s new range of monitors come in three sizes: the DT-U27HB, DT-U31 and the

They’re around 11kg, so quite difficult to throw around. All controls are on the front of the panels and all inputs neatly available at the back, without any bending of the wrist for access. FEATURES We mainly concentrated on the top-of-the-range DT-U31PRO with the full 4K DCI pixel match. First impressions are of a fully featured monitor, ready for on-set 4K grading, as well as grading/monitoring in more controlled environments. If you are dealing with wide colour gamut content, the PRO can help with 99.4% of P3 and 83.8% of the BT2020 gamut; ITU709 is 100%. 4K interfaces include 12G-SDI, HDMI 2.0 and 4K SFP. HDR compatibility includes support for HLG, ST.2084 PQ and S-Log3.

DT-U31PRO. No prizes for guessing we are talking about 27-inch and 31-inch panels. The 27-inch monitor matches pixel to pixel a UHD 3840x2160 measurement in a 10-bit panel, with a 750 nit brightness number. The 31-inch panels include a 31.5-inch 3840x2160 10-bit panel for the JVC U31, and for the U31PRO you get the full 4K DCI of 4096x2160 – again with a 10-bit performance, but in a 31.1-inch panel. All the panels are based on a high-quality LCD with LED backlight and packaged in robust metal frames to protect them from on-set roughing up or life on a broadcast truck.

Log support is also comprehensive with built-in De- log LUTs, including JVC J-Log1, Arri Log-C, Sony S-Log2, S-Log3, Canon C-Log, Panasonic V-Log and RedLogFilm LUTs to convert to ITU- Rec.709 directly. BONUS Other more bonus feature includes support for a low latency mode (less than half frame) under 4K input sources. This is a special image processing mode for lip-sync monitoring. Webserver IP remote control connects the monitor via LAN, so you can read the monitor status or set menu by a web browser. There’s also support for 3DLUT precise auto colour calibration, with built-in colour generator and calibration software. The panels supports X-rite i1 Display (the special version) and JETI Specbos 1211 to directly plug into the monitor’s USB port to auto calibrate. These panels are feature rich and built for the job – either for the increasing necessity of on-set grading, or monitoring and grading elsewhere. The user interface is easy to learn and options quick to customise, with a row of buttons and controls along the front of the units. The PRO unit is a great looking panel and ready for full 4K production. The unit is only £7500, which seems to be very competitively priced. The DT-U31E is £4500 and the DT-U27HB is £5250.
