Content delivery

“We had access to expertise and ready-made components that we could integrate. They were difficult issues to resolve – but we succeeded”

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES With experience in the OTT and streaming business, NativeWaves was confident it could deliver the project in the three-month time frame B1 SmartTV specified. “We rebuilt the Sportworld and mobile apps on iOS from scratch, so that both had a modern feel and provided the flexibility to support advanced use cases, like multiview integration,” Haslauer says. “Our team of developers and technical product managers collaborated with B1 SmartTV to understand its requirements, with agency Coeno on the UX design. We also rebuilt the entire back-end platform to enable more dynamic content management, while retaining the key benefits of the old app with its electronic programme guide.” The project inevitably threw up a few challenges, in the realm of subscription management and payments, as well as access. NativeWaves worked alongside

Sportainment and payment provider Plenigo to resolve these. “We had access to expertise and ready-made components that we could integrate. They were difficult issues to solve in a short time frame, but we succeeded – while still guaranteeing security levels.” Although the main focus of the redesign was the Sportworld app, NativeWaves designed the mobile version in parallel, ensuring it was ready for launch a month later. “The Sportworld app was more difficult to build, because it is controlled via a remote. This limits what the user can do and requires a different flow. We incorporated a lot of additional logic to ease this, by providing easier login and checkout processes via mobile phones that communicate with the smart TV. Building these features was complex.” The app was designed to be easy to extend, so that brand-new features can be added in the future.

This, says Weiner, is absolutely crucial, because Sportworld’s digital offering is an ongoing development process that will continue to focus on improving to meet customer expectations. Samsung is currently including Sportworld in its nationwide ‘Made for Germany’ promotional campaign, which offers new smart TV customers the ‘Samsung Sport Paket’ for up to 12 months. This gives viewers access to content from 12 sports broadcasters, including eSports1, Sport1+, SportBild+, Sportdigital Fussball, European League of Football, Motorvision.TV and Fight24.TV, among others.

TEAM PLAYERS The app’s success has, in part, been due to the close partnership with Samsung, using its smart TVs as a key platform
