CANON EOS R5 C

THE VERDICT When we tested the Canon EOS R5, we said if you were on the fence about the Canon EOS R series and its RF mount lenses, you needn’t wait any longer. It’s a serious system that will develop even more. For filmmaking, the R5 C is the next iteration of EOS – and it’s very impressive. Improvements for video are immense, from a range of codecs to zero overheating, not to mention waveforms, dual base ISO sensor and audio recorded with 4K/120p footage. Raw options are quite staggering, 4:2:2 10-bit codecs packed with colour info and the dual menu is thoughtful. There’s no full-size HDMI, IBIS, superfast 240fps frame rates, built-in ND filters or stacked sensor, though. Battery life is not great, either. If you can work around those issues, there’s every reason to fall in love with this camera.

HOW IT RATES

Features: 9 It has everything, apart from IBIS and a stacked sensor Performance: 9

The footage is incredible, with amazing colours and no overheating Handling: 9

Most of the benefits of both a mirrorless and cinema camera Value for money: 9 Not much more expensive than the standard EOS R5 OVERALL RATING: 9/10 Amazing quality and Raw performance in a camera built for filmmakers Pros: Video AF, 8K Raw, 4K/120p slow motion Cons: No 240fps at all, heavy on batteries

DCI or regular 4K is a great middle ground, especially in 4:2:2 10-bit XF-AVC All-I. Files are smaller than Raw, but easier to edit. Recording in 8K does give a visibly more detailed file, but also a worse rolling shutter effect than 4K, so that might be a concern to you. In all the most-used full-frame settings, right down to FHD, image quality is incredible. There is so much colour information in the files, they can be graded with ease. And Canon’s colour science is legendarily good. Cine cam Remaining from the EOS R5 is the Dual Pixel AF system Mark II, which tracks moving subjects well and has excellent face and eye detection. It is customisable in terms of focus speed. Use the touchscreen for focus pulls by tapping on the subject. And for manual, the focus guide gives a visual indication of which way to turn the focusing ring. Customise this for RF lenses to give a more linear, direct response similar to a manual lens. MEMORY MIX There’s one CFexpress Type B card slot and one for SD cards (top). Controls will be familiar to Canon users (above), although most buttons have two functions, depending on the mode

Xeen CF cine primes on the camera using an EF to RF mount – and it transforms the handling. It really does feel like a genuine cinema camera experience. That’s helped by the excellent, well-sized multi-angle screen. However, the EVF is not the best; a lack of stacked-sensor tech means it’s a bit laggy. Maybe that’s an area the EOS R5 C could be improved? But that would drive the price up significantly, and doesn’t matter hugely to filmmakers. Ultimately, Canon has managed to turn its EOS R5 into a machine aimed at professional moviemakers – and it delivers in bucketloads.
