CANON EOS R5 C

in an 8K, or even very high-quality 4K production – or if you needed 4K/120p for super slow-motion. Recording to an Atomos monitor extended these times, but you couldn’t exactly stand there with an impatient client checking their watch, while your camera required a chill-out session. Beat the heat The new R5 C completely eliminates these issues as, like the Panasonic S1H, it hosts a cooling fan between the body and rear screen. It makes the camera a tad fatter and heavier, but that’s a small price to pay. And vents don’t affect the weather sealing in any way. Try as we might, it was evidently impossible to make the camera overheat in any setting, including 8K – which now goes as high as 60p for some slow-motion action. This was in the UK in May, hardly scorchingly ambient temperatures, but the memory cards fill up or battery runs out before there are any heat issues. The life of the 2100mAh LP-E6NH battery is actually pretty terrible, but you can plug in a USB-C power source to keep the camera running indefinitely. You may have a bagful of old LP-E6 batteries that would also work, although they don’t last as long as the new version.

and all the buttons on the body have two different labels, since their function varies depending on the mode set. In photo, the camera boots up with the normal EOS mirrorless menu system. But flick to video, and the menu system changes to that of the Cinema EOS range, allowing you to set shutter angle and gain, rather than shutter speed and ISO. It also enables waveform and vectorscope monitoring on the screen and viewfinder, which is a huge benefit. Once you’ve used waveforms, you’ll never want to go back to histograms. The camera now features Canon’s multi-interface hotshoe, an idea pioneered by Sony – and another great addition. You can fit accessories like wireless mics or an XLR audio interface, and this can not only communicate with the camera without wires, but also be powered from the camera battery. Front and back tally lamps are found on this new body, which can be set to flash when the battery is getting low or the memory card is filling up. There’s also a port for timecode, but sadly the HDMI remains the small micro version rather than full-size Type A. One big omission from the R5 C is the removal of the in-body image stabilisation system. Canon believes professional filmmakers will mount the camera on a tripod or gimbal. For run-and-gun shooters,

The fan itself isn’t totally silent, but the noise is very low. Apply different settings to reduce the fan speed, if you really must. We never heard any fan noise in an actual recording, but it does exist. Unfortunately, this can’t be totally turned off. Although many people simply focus on the cooling fan, there are plenty more new features on the C-model R5, which still retains the high-resolution stills performance of the original camera. Now, an on/off switch lets you select between photo and video mode,

JUST CONNECT Sadly, the HDMI socket is not a full-size Type A version, but the rest of the I/O options are good

BARK AND BITE From locked-down shots to tracking a flighty dog, the Canon Dual Pixel AF system works well
