right care and attention, your new bathroom could become a truly stylish, tranquil space

day. And yet we let the design and decor ball drop here. Perhaps it’s because we become overwhelmed by the intricacies of plumbing, or fall prey to an assumption that bathrooms must always be clinically white and pristine? Director of Ripples Saffron Walden, Paula Callaway, advises on how to create a space that not only enables you to keep the room spotless, but equally maintains a warm and happy ambience. A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO DESIGN Over the last decade, bathrooms have become mini-spa-esque temples, inviting solitude and relaxed contemplation as much as bathing. Showers are larger, tubs bigger and deeper, and even entire rooms designed as walk-in wet rooms. The emphasis on escape is heightened as the bathroom is likely the only lockable room in the house. However, when we choose what surrounds us with intention – that is, when we choose items that tell our authentic stories – everything around us becomes capable of rejuvenating and revitalising. Why? Because contemplating the colours, patterns or fabrics that make your heart sing is a step toward discovering who you truly are. INJECTING FUN In short, bathrooms must never be neglected, but they needn’t be overly complicated. Rather, you can continue the decorative themes you have explored elsewhere, and don’t be afraid to have some fun! Paint the ceiling lemon yellow; hang full-length velvet curtains (assuming good ventilation); add a glorious splashback of patterned tiles. And don’t forget the details. Pile your towels high on a small sculptural stool and mix the textures for increased tactility. Your taps, too, will be frequently touched, so don’t skimp here. Finally, wall-hung units make even a small room feel spacious, and twin sinks make busy mornings efficient. Add a mix of lighting, and your bathroom is set for everything from showers to bubble baths.
