MOPHIE POWERSTATION XXL £70/$79 zagg.com
ABOVE The Powerstation XXL has three USB sockets, one of which is USB-C
a touchbar which has a 12,960mAh battery. So by adding 20,000mAh of power from the Mophie Powerstation XXL, you’ve hugely increased the time you can edit for. The Mophie has three USB sockets. One is a USB-C which is used for charging the bank up from the mains, or powering up a USB-C device like camera or laptop. It can put out 15Wof power, at 5V/ 3A. There are two standard USB-A ports, too. One is rated at 5V/1.0A and the other at 5V/2.4A, so they are ideal for charging up phones, tablets or other devices. You can use a USB-C and USB-A port at the same time to charge up two devices, too, to a maximum total of 5V/3.4A or roughly 17W. It has enough juice to charge up an iPhone roughly seven times. The controls are very simple. There’s a button on the side to start
With everyone relying on their battery-hungry mobile phones so much these days, it’s a common site to see people hunting for AC power sources or plugging their phones into mobile power banks for a quick boost of charge. Mophie is one of the world’s biggest names in mobile power banks, and its latest Powerstation XXL takes it one step further as it has a 20,000mAh capacity and a USB-C charging port. That means it’s of real use to professional filmmakers as it can now power up suitable USB-C cameras and also a suitable laptop on location, such as the popular MacBook Pro. If you’ve ever edited films on a MacBook Pro using just its own battery power, you’d best only be making a short film as it doesn’t last too long! We use a MacBook Pro with
charging, and four LEDs to show the charge status of the Mophie. It comes with a fabric finish to make it more stylish, says Mophie. We thought it just seemed to attract more dust that way, though. It weights 435g/0.96lb so there’s a reasonable amount of heft to it, and at 77.5x159x32.2mm (3.05x6.26x0.91in) it’s virtually the same length and width as an Apple iPhone 11 XS Max, but twice as deep. For the price, it’s a bit of a steal for anyone who uses a laptop on location. Buy a few of them and you can edit for hours. And at under 100 watt-hours, it’s legal to carry on a plane. AD PROMOVIEMAKERRATING: 9/10 Loads of power for your camera, phone or suitable laptop Pros: Powerful and affordable Cons: One port is only 1.0A
