PHOTOGRAPHY IS A journey, from previsualising and seeing pictures to having finished prints in front of you. Of course, the modern reality is that most images get no further than a hard drive and being enjoyed on a monitor. There’s nothing wrong at all with that, but having something physical and tangible in your hands is something very special. Getting prints is so easy nowadays, whether you print at home or use a printing service, such as those featured on these pages. A digital file can be uploaded directly from your camera phone, smart device or hard drive through cyberspace and, a few days later, you get the results through the post. During the Covid-19 pandemic, processing labs may not be working at full capacity and turnaround times may not be as quick as normal, so that is worth checking if you need prints quickly. The latest printing services make upload really easy – whether it’s a single image or a batch of
pictures – and most have details of what you need to do on the lab’s website (ie what resolution and colour space or profile to use) and often advice on making sure you send a file suitable for the end result. For example, a file measuring 1500 pixels across is not enough to make a successful 20x16in print. So, over these pages we’re highlighting printing labs that offer quality printing at competitive prices among their many services. There is so much choice right now that it is no problem getting prints made on textured, metallic finish or fine-art papers, as well as the more conventional glossy and lustre surfaces. There is also the opportunity to use your images in different ways, too. You can, for example, feature your shots on gift wrapping or presented in a style smart enough to grace any living room, or put your pictures in a plush book. Oh yes, there’s nothing quite like seeing your pictures in print.
