LOVE LOCAL
Next to share a story in our new interview series, Myles Strickland tells us what drew him to Cambridge three years ago
Walking around Cambridge with all the trees and greenery gives the place a nice vibe
I’ve been working as a firefighter in Cambridge for eight years now. At first, I used to commute in, but I quickly fell in love with the city and moved here in 2022. It strikes a great balance between being a city and a town, especially with all the green spaces around – it really feels like the perfect middle ground. What I love most is the town centre. It’s bustling in summer, and I often go kayaking along the river out to Grantchester. That stretch is peaceful and beautiful; walking around Cambridge with all the trees and greenery everywhere gives the whole place a nice vibe. The spot that means the most to me is definitely the River Cam. Whether I’m out kayaking, strolling along the banks or just sitting by the water to unwind after a shift,
it’s where I feel most connected to the city and can truly relax. One of the best nights I’ve had here was seeing Confidence Man at the Junction in 2022. The venue is small, which made it feel intimate and fun. My housemate and I were up on the barriers – it was unforgettable. When people ask me where to eat in Cambridge, I always recommend Bread & Meat on Bene’t Street. They specialise in roast meats, sourdough bread, poutine, craft ales and coffee. The food is fantastic, and it’s my go-to spot to take friends. One thing I’ve never done here, but want to do, is visit Cambridge University Botanic Garden when everything’s in full bloom. I’m hoping to get there this year and finally see it at its best.
