magazine show, and if you want to change something about the design, it’s a fairly simple exercise.” WELCOME TO THE METAVERSE In China and Japan, the virtual YouTuber, or ‘VTuber,’ has been rising in popularity on platforms like YouTube or Twitch, using virtual, animated avatars to deliver vlog content. “If you want to become a hit VTuber, you first need an interesting personality and avatar,” explains Sikkema. “But technical tools, like Xsens motion capture and virtual sets, also make the difference. We see a growing role for virtual avatars on virtual sets in both content creation and broadcasting concepts. This will evolve the market for virtual sets on both the high-end and low-end side of creating new content.” Rockhill believes the technology is going to accelerate the development of the ‘metaverse,’ the digital world of commerce, and communication coexisting alongside the real world. “It will allow us to create a whole new virtual world with its own economy and rules. This includes
releasing a digital version of a new product or experience, creating a game or performance in a virtual space, or inviting audiences into a digital world. For example, Balenciaga held virtual fashion shows, Siemens showcased its latest developments in a virtual trade show, and artist Marshmello performed to 11 million virtual viewers within Fortnite . “Brands will be able to provide more tailored, personalised and meaningful experiences, as the nature of the metaverse is uniquely experienced by every individual user.” Ultimately, it’s still about the creativity and not the technology. No virtual set is going to be effective without some careful thinking and design behind it. “Virtual productions are really about studio craft,” says Dowling. “I’ve seen a few badly designed sets go to air, and they don’t stay on for long. Set design is an art, not a science, and there is a reason why the people who do it are at the top of their game.”
