LED canvases means creators have access to tools to deliver high-end virtual content with less cost. Brainstorm recently released Edison Pro, a template-based solution for virtual events and online presentations. Churruca says: “Edison Pro has been designed to be used by anyone. In essence, we are creating a broadcast show outside of the broadcast environment. The user creates a virtual scenario to place the presenter in, adds rich media to help with the presentation, and streams the resulting content. The system comes with a free library of downloadable assets and complete editable projects.” VIRTUAL SET IN THE HOUSE? With video calls and virtual meetings becoming the reality for a new WFH generation, are domestic virtual sets the next step? Churruca thinks that’s unlikely, but says the number of green screens available for domestic content creation is rising. “I am sure that many of the remote video-conferencing calls we’ve watched, connecting with experts or journalists, could have benefited from a green screen, so the remote guest could be placed, or tele- transported, ‘live’ to the news studio.” Russell adds: “Large broadcasters still want their flagship shows to
look great. It’s less about having a virtual studio in your own home, and more about providing the production with a good-quality, well-lit video feed that they can then add production value to – such as placing you in a virtual environment. “I think we’ll see more use of hybrid models that blend physical sets and traditional working methods and on- site personnel, with AR, virtual studio elements and remote contribution.” Outside of broadcast, larger entities like corporates or sports clubs – which have internal resources for presentations, training videos and internal communications – are sometimes adapting those for virtual set use. YouTube vloggers and influencers are exploring them, too. “Sports clubs, corporates and smaller TV channels were some of the first users to really embrace and push the technology,” says Dowling. “In many respects, virtual production was more relevant to these types of users, because they had fewer resources. They normally only have one studio in their facility, but want it used for different types of productions – this is far easier to achieve with a virtual set than a traditional hard set. It takes a few minutes to re-skin a green screen studio from a morning show to a
