just provides the perfect solution,” Luke attests. “Phones have really spoiled us, in a weird way – they’ve taken so much of the heavy lifting out of our hands, so we can just focus on recording moments, and that’s exactly what most people want to do with their photography, first and foremost. “Fujifilm being a company with such a long heritage in great colour science – people who really know what they’re doing – you can comfortably let them handle that side of things. It means you can fully focus on creating.”

photographers over a big creative hurdle, Luke also points out. “Sometimes the biggest challenge is finding the inspiration to go and make photos in the first place. But knowing that you haven’t got the entire processing and editing workflow ahead of you – that can be just what you need to take any extra stress off and just get going,” he argues. “When you go out for a big session, you can have that thought: ‘I’ve got to sit there and edit all these photos.’ It can take half a day, up to a day of work. While I do love being in that editing hole for hours on end, it might not be what other people want to get out of the process. “Getting those awesome, filmic results without having to put in too much brain work after the fact, it

reason! To me, it’s perfectly filmic without being too heavily stylised. It really takes the digital edge off the images. Classic Negative is a second favourite of mine. I just love how it renders greens – it’s a sage-toned, saturated look that I love so much. “I’ve also been experimenting with some of the older, legacy Film Simulations – like Provia and Astia. It’s clean and versatile, but there’s something about it that doesn’t feel like a JPEG from other camera brands – it just has this inherent character and personality to it.” Having these great-looking images come straight out of camera can be a huge help for getting

way to what he wants. “There are a few looks that I really love, which are very similar to how I would want to edit anyway,” he muses. “I’ve even been lucky enough to have some of the work I’m super proud of just come straight out of the back of the camera, no post work required.” With 20 unique looks to choose from, there’s a lot of latitude for discovery. “Classic Chrome is my favourite,” Luke asserts. “It seems to be a fan favourite in the whole Fujifilm community – and for good

that – because I’ve got the look 80% of the way there already,” he points out. “Between my editing and the Film Simulations, I can get it close enough to that analogue look to satiate that part of me. “For me, using film is now about the whole process of it. Having that total lack of electronics – it’s so mechanical and manual – that’s what I get the enjoyment from.” While Luke still edits many of his photos from Raw, his favourite Film Simulations can get him most of the

“Enjoyment of photography is often more nuanced than simply pursuing a perfect likeness”
