they give can’t be underestimated. “At The Perse School, we always ask students to give tours to prospective parents,” reveals Claire Ziwa. “We never give them a script. Instead, we say: ‘Show them around and be completely honest.’” What matters is whether a child would be happy at this school. “If a child is happy, they will learn, thrive and reach their potential,” she says. Her advice is to pay close attention to how kind, caring and inspiring the teachers are, as well as the way they interact with the students, how they speak, listen to and engage with them. The key point to identify is whether the school will get to know your child in depth and provide them with the most individualised education they can get. “This is not something that’s necessarily evident on a poster, in a set of results or an inspection,” details Dr Paddy Wallace. “Instead, it’s about engaging with staff, looking at how the school is set up, exploring what the views are on various academic and pastoral situations and how form tutoring is managed.”
