SPLIT BY SECTOR
Of the types of organisations affected, 52% of those in information and communications firms reported a cyberattack in 2022. That’s compared to 47% in administration and real estate and 54% in finance and insurance.
Given these numbers, it’s probably safe to assume that hackers don’t discriminate much between sectors. Still, it’s important to note that financial information (as well as medical records) is an obvious target.

But how many cyberattacks are actually reported? In the tech industry, 86 companies reported cyberattacks in 2022, up from 67 just two years prior. This number is far lower than that of healthcare (344) and financial services (268), but is nonetheless cause for valid concern.

Industries vary in their approaches to cybersecurity threats, as well as in their readiness to handle them. Somewhat alarmingly, ‘technology, media and telecommunications’ (TMT) has the lowest average cyber maturity of all industries, according to McKinsey. That being said, maturity levels vary widely within the sector. But on the whole, TMT has a long way to go to achieve a ‘proactive approach’ when it comes to cybersecurity.
