A Cambri d ge 105 C h ristmas CHRISTMAS CONCERTS, A YEAR IN REVIEW AND A CITY IN LOCKDOWN. CAMBRIDGE 105 BREAKFAST SHOW PRESENTER JULIAN CLOVER PREVIEWS THE STATION’S CHRISTMAS SCHEDULE
Earlier this year, Cambridge 105 Radio produced a day of programming around Strawberry Fair. The annual Midsummer Common event was one of many to fall victim to the Covid-19 crisis, but our Virtual Strawberry Fair was well received, both by the volunteers who contributed to the show and Audio UK, which nominated it for Best Live Event/Outside Broadcast in its annual awards. We’ll be replaying the best of the day. In addition to bringing you some of the best live sessions of the year, we also have a special lockdown concert from Cambridge musical collective We Are Sound, and highlights from the Rotary Christmas Charity Concerts. Add to this our regular review shows, looking back at 12 months in the city and south Cambridgeshire, including how we tackled broadcasting during lockdown. reparing a radio schedule for the Christmas holiday period is a little like decorating the tree. You set out everything side by side,
then stand back, hoping the lights keep shining. For Cambridge 105 Radio, we have to strike the balance between Christmas specials and the familiar voices you hear the rest of the year. The last thing we want to do is make it sound like we’ve sacked the regulars! At the same time, they want to be with their families, too. Lucy and myself are missing a couple of weeks over Christmas, though we’re popping up in other places instead. Lucy is going to chat with the mayor of Cambridge, councillor Russ McPherson, who is choosing his favourite tracks. And although it may be different to usual, I’m introducing our coverage of midnight Mass from the church of Our Lady of the Assumption and the English Martyrs on Hills Road. We’re also going to focus on a collection of Cambridge streets, with programmes that tell the stories of the lanterns that light up some of the shops
on Mill Road in the Mill Road Lanterns project. Nearby Ross Street also falls under the spotlight, as we take a listen to some of the recordings made with local residents by Cambridge Junction for its Would Like to Meet project. Someone who knew the streets of Cambridge inside out was the road sweeper turned tour guide Allan Brigham, who sadly passed away this year, and in a special programme, Leigh Chambers learns about his life from those who were closest to him.
