Filmmaking with Panasonic’s cheapest full-frame Lumix is now improved thanks to the latest software upgrade

WORDS ADAM DUCKWORTH

P anasonic’s full-frame Lumix S1 mirrorless camera was an amazing bit of filmmaking kit at launch, but now it’s even better thanks to a new firmware that unlocks new features such as a 4K 4:2:2 10-bit recording internally at 30p or externally via HDMI in 60p. Best of all, this SFU2 upgrade is free for anyone who bought an S1 before 30 September in certain locations. After that, it’s £179/$199. The big changes are V-Log recording with the promise of more than 14 stops of dynamic range, and to give it the same V-Log and V-Gamut, compatible with Panasonic’s Cinema Varicam, EVA1 and new S1Hmirrorless. So it’s now an ideal second camera to use alongside Panasonic’s cinema cameras or the newer S1H, which we

test in this issue. The internal

recording upgrade is 4:2:2 10-bit 4KMOV Long GOP at up to 30fps at 150Mbps, while 50 and 60p 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 is outputted via HDMI to an external recording unit like an Atomos. We tested it on an Atomos Shogun Inferno and it worked without any hitches. There is now in-camera LUT application enabling playback of V-Log either during or after recording. This is the LUT Display with Custom Function and is easy to navigate to in the menus. There is also waveformmonitoring to help you get your exposure bang on. And if you add on the DMW-XLR1 connector to allow use of XLRmics then record in MOV, you can select very high-quality 48kHz/24-bit or

“The real benefit is the addition of V-Log and 10-bit 4K capture, which is a great combination to get themost out of the 24MP sensor”
