GEAR OF THE YEAR

SPECIAL AWARDS

five of the cameras in our launch of the year category are also full- frame models. But it’s not just about cameras. Apple ProRes Raw is a codec that’s attracting lots of attention, as is one of the products that includes it – the groundbreaking Atomos Shogun 7 combined monitor, recorder and switcher. And don’t forget the British-made Rotolight Titan X2 LED light that offers innovations such as diffusion that can be remotely controlled. It’s out-of-the-box thinking like this that our special awards are designed to honour: innovation that really benefits the filmmaking professional. So, there are lots of choices to make. Please do feel free to have your say and to help us to come up with a comprehensive list of some of the greatest products available to filmmakers today.

Every year, there is always a rash of new products and technology that continues to surprise us all. Unique and innovative bits of kit that throw a spanner in the works, challenge what’s been done in the past and ultimately improve the lot of the working filmmaker. And in 2019, the launch of exciting new products continued to increase and turn heads. It’s only right that these should be celebrated in their own special section. We’re talking about innovation here and product launches that have made a particular splash over the past year, and there are plenty to choose from. There has been a glut of new and exciting cameras, often packing innovations such as large 6K resolution, full-frame sensors, advanced focusing systems, Raw recording and even shockingly affordable prices, in some cases. In our innovation of the year class, seven of the shortlist are cameras and all but one of these pack a full-frame sensor. The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K may look like the odd one out as it’s a Super35 model, but more than makes up for it with 6K file sizes and internal Raw recording.
