The Rode NTG5 isn’t new any more, but it still packs a punch that so many filmmakers love. It is a relatively short, lightweight XLR shotgun microphone that uses a design with circular acoustic ports instead of slots. This means it can be short, yet is great at getting rid of background noise. It comes in a kit that includes a pistol-grip shock mount, mic clip, cable and everything you need to use it on an XLR mount for a camera or boom.

Rycote’s line-up of high-end mics expands even more with the new BD-10 and HC-35 pencil mics, both XLR-fit. Each costs £638, with the US price to be confirmed. The BD-10 has a figure-of-eight pattern for recording in the field, with a primary focus on ambient sounds and dialogue. The long HC-35 shotgun microphone has been specially engineered for sports broadcasts, expansive outdoor shots and scripted TV dialogue. With low self- noise performance synonymous with all Rycote microphones, both the BD-10 and HC-35 are versatile and integrate with Rycote’s industry- standard windshields and accessories. The BD-10 has an innovative capsule design, which allows for accurate stereo recordings with excellent detail and clarity. It boasts an

As the NTG5 weighs just 76g/2.68oz and measures 203mm/7.99in, it is small so is less affected by wind than larger mics. SENNHEISER MKE 600 £235/$330 sennheiser.com

It’s a highly directional mic due to its design, which isolates sound and rejects noise from the sides and rear. A switchable low-cut filter reduces handling and wind noise further, as well as background hum.

The Sennheiser MKE 600 professional XLR mic is always one of the biggest sellers in any major camera retailer. It’s well proven, as the cornerstone of many filmmakers’ kitbags over a long period. The mic is incredibly durable and is also renowned for its excellent speech reproduction across its entire 40Hz to
