The Rode NTG5 isn’t new any more, but it still packs a punch that so many filmmakers love. It is a relatively short, lightweight XLR shotgun microphone that uses a design with circular acoustic ports instead of slots. This means it can be short, yet is great at getting rid of background noise. It comes in a kit that includes a pistol-grip shock mount, mic clip, cable and everything you need to use it on an XLR mount for a camera or boom.
Rycote’s line-up of high-end mics expands even more with the new BD-10 and HC-35 pencil mics, both XLR-fit. Each costs £638, with the US price to be confirmed.
