DEITY THEOS DIGITAL WIRELESS KIT £1148/$1090 deitymic.com
The Theos transmitter can be natively synced wirelessly from the Deity TC-1 timecode generator. This ensures backup WAV files sync with the master file in post. This is particularly useful for multicam, as audio and video are perfectly synced. The transmitter can be synced via a 3.5mm jack if using third-party timecode generators. The dual-channel receiver is camera- mountable and compatible with mobile devices. Both the TS and RX components are made from a tough, CNC-milled aluminium chassis. There are twin SMA antenna ports, so damaged antennae can be easily and cheaply replaced. Power comes from internal 3000mAh lithium batteries which last for 14 hours in the receiver and ten in each transmitter. They are recharged via the USB ports, which can also provide external power, although AA batteries can also be used. As Deity is part of lighting brand Aputure, the Theos kit can be remotely controlled by the Sidus Link app that also controls Aputure and Amaran lights.
Deity’s Theos kit comes with a single receiver and twin transmitters and is a highly advanced, digital wireless system that provides a fast and easy remote- controlled workflow. The Theos works in the less-crowded UHF radio spectrum rather than the 2.4GHz band to deliver reliable wireless transmission at a range up to 91m/300ft. It also features swappable frequency ranges based on the user’s phone GPS so you can move country with one kit. An onboard recorder within the transmitter features both 24-bit and 32-bit float formats, so you don’t have to concern yourself with setting levels on your backup WAV files. The recordings will be saved to a micro SD card up to 128GB so there’s plenty of space. The built-in recorder features an impressive self-noise of just -130dBu (A-weighting, gain at +30dB, 150ohm source impedance). This puts it on par with some of the most-expensive audio recorders in the industry.
DJI MIC 2 £309/$349 dji.com
DJI’s new Mic 2 has a longer battery life compared to the original, a new control screen and dial, as well as integration with other fresh DJI kit. But its biggest new features are 32-bit float internal recording and intelligent noise-cancelling. Each transmitter has 8GB of internal storage, offering up to 14 hours of uncompressed 48kHz 24-bit audio as well as 32-bit float internal recording. This not only delivers high- quality audio but also adapts to complex sound environments. As an added layer of protection, the DJI Mic 2 offers a safety-track feature. This records a second track at -6dB alongside the primary audio, safeguarding against unexpected audio level spikes. The DJI Mic 2 is easy to use; opening the new metal charging case wakes the kit, automatically pairing the receiver and transmitters. It can also be connected to the DJI Osmo Action 4 and Osmo Pocket 3 via Bluetooth and is compatible with other devices through USB-C and Lightning adapters plus 3.5mm TRS analogue output. A 1.1-inch touchscreen with a manual dial allows adjustments in volume, gain, brightness and more settings. There’s a maximum audio transmission range of up to 250m/820ft. Each transmitter and receiver has a six-hour operating time, which can be extended to up to 18 hours with the charging case.
