EDITING FOR MASTERS OF THE CUT A strong story, amazing lighting, great camera work and incredible audio are the ingredients for a film – but the editing is where it’s all mixed together to create something extra special. In this category, any sort of film is welcome, as long as it highlights some amazing editing skills. It could be in the cut, grading, motion graphics or more. Show us your finest work.

shot complements the next. There are no jarring cuts or flashy transitions to take away from the story. An edit that augments story without getting in the way is one sign of a job well done when it comes to creating a successful documentary. “The video was shot with a Nikon Z 6 and an Atomos Ninja V recorder,” says Anne. “I wrote the script on the plane from Portugal, where I live, to San José airport in Costa Rica. Editing and colour grading were done daily in my room at the Selina Santa Teresa North using DaVinci Resolve and Autodesk Flame.” The film was shot in 15 days in partnership with the Selina Film Residency Program and shows off the beautiful location and passion of the surfers in equal measure.

When you are presented with such a visually stunning location as a beach-front surfing retreat in Costa Rica’s Santa Teresa bay, flooded with glorious light on soft sand surrounded by palm trees, it’s easy to get carried away with the incredible visuals. But Frédéric Anne’s video documentary carefully mixes stunning shots with slow- motion captures, behind-the-scenes views and dialogue to tell an incredible story of human adventure, with people sharing the same passion: surfing. The entry will compete in both the editing and documentary categories of our Filmmaker of the Year Awards. It’s a stellar example of how careful editing is crucial in telling a compelling story, where each
