SHERBOURNE: What’s exciting is the scope of what’s possible within accessible tools. You can create a cinema-scale Atmos or VR mix for any project with Pro Tools and a desktop controller. Film stages, too, have embraced the in-the-box workflow, giving them instant recall of projects and the ability to change any detail right up to the final print. NIELSEN: The emergence of subminiature mics allows the entire production to benefit from more freedom in creativity, movement and safety – while still providing fantastic sound. With the expanded placement capabilities and pristine audio capture, these mics also allow post-production teams to have more creative possibilities in the editing stages. Beyond the evolution of more traditional tools and practices, we’re also seeing the rise of more immersive experiences, like virtual and extended realities. How is this shaping audio? JOHNSON: Virtual reality can be a powerful experience, but realistic, well- crafted audio plays a huge part in selling the illusion. Without believable audio tightly and dynamically integrated with the visuals, people struggle to suspend disbelief, in much the same way as if they are interacting in VR without a representation of their limbs.
