SOUND JUDGEMENT Advances in audio technology are freeing up time to concentrate on creativity
and easy to set up, using the TrueDepth (think Face ID) camera on your phone to scan the shape of your ears. Spatial audio content is tailored to the user, improving the overall experience. How are these tools shaping the creative process? AMMERMANN: Some tools try to make the work on these complex, immersive and interactive audio applications as easy as possible. That way, producers can remain flexible, use new opportunities and amplify a fresh creative process – which certainly will lead to fantastic, novel entertainment experiences. VINEHILL-CLIFFE: The biggest factor is that so many new tools are being created to speed up and streamline the more technical or ‘boring’ aspects of audio, which leaves content creators with time and energy to dedicate to exciting and creative aspects. The history function in Nugen Audio’s VisLM loudness meter eliminates the need to measure the loudness of an entire project in one pass – potentially saving hours of work. Additionally, our brand-new plug-in, Halo Vision, uses contextual correlation in its correlation meters, to differentiate between anti-correlated audio that is actually likely to cause problems in a mix, and anti-correlated audio that is
basically inconsequential due to level differences. It’s saving audio engineers the headache of having to figure this out for themselves. Similarly time-saving breakthroughs have been the focus of some other manufacturers, too. JOHNSON: The world of third-party applications and plug-ins is fast moving. With increased computational power, these tools can leverage technologies such as machine learning to improve processes like noise reduction. Getting better results faster ultimately gives people more time to focus on being creative in the post- production process. That creativity can be applied in a new dimension when working in immersive formats, which enable mixers to have more control over the way the content they’re mixing will translate over the wide range of listening environments it’s likely to be consumed in. You previously had to focus on the primary deliverable format and compromise the others.
