TENBA AXIS V2 24L £270/$290 tenba.com
Tenba doesn’t just have an extensive history making camera bags, but also designing and supplying rucksacks for the US military. This technology filters through into the second generation of Axis bags – part of the Tactical range – featuring MOLLE-compatible loops on both the back and sides to attach accessories from Tenba, or many outdoors shops. There’s a stealthy black version, but we had Multicam material. Apparently it’s bang on trend for fashionistas, with some streetwear brands using it. Both colours are water resistant, but a rain cover is included. This is reversible, with one side black and the other silver to reflect UV rays. The bags come in 20, 24 and 32L. We went down the middle; the 24L bag feels about right, not too bulky or heavy when stuffed full of equipment. It’s also legal as a carry-on for all air travel, while the larger 32L version is only accepted on certain airlines – mainly in the US. This pack is built to hold two mirrorless cameras, up to eight lenses, a 16in laptop and a compact drone. Of course, this depends on the size of your glass. We easily fit two Sony Alpha cameras and five lenses, plus a drone with room to spare. The padding is good quality and simple to move for customisation, with several internal pockets plus a laptop sleeve.
CAMO ROLE A Multicam pattern is used on the military- inspired Tenba backpack
“It’s the first camera backpack to include a hidden neoprene pocket that holds an Apple AirTag or Tile Bluetooth tracker”
The main camera kit can be accessed from the top if the bag is on the floor and standing upright, or by swivelling it around your body – and from the side. For full access, the whole back panel will unzip. This means – if placed on the ground – the straps are upright to avoid picking up any dirt. It also means a sneaky thief can’t unzip the bag and run away with all your kit while you’re wearing it. As another safety feature, it’s the first camera backpack to include a hidden neoprene pocket that holds an Apple AirTag or Tile Bluetooth tracker. Fit on the back is good, as it uses Tenba’s Airflow harness, and auto- adjusting straps allow the pack to fit pretty much anyone. It now also comes with dual sternum straps to guarantee load-balancing. These are designed to let women position the straps above or below the bust for more comfort – and the lower sternum strap and waist strap can be removed if preferred. Other nice touches include a trolley strap, so it can slide on the top of wheeled bags if you have rolling luggage. The side pockets can accept
