ATOMOS SHOGUN CONNECT £1319/$1299 atomos.com

Whether you use a mirrorless camera with HDMI outputs or a cine cam with 12G-SDI, the new Atomos Shogun Connect brings your set-up bang up to date in terms of HDR monitoring, Raw recording, camera-to-cloud workflow and live streaming. This is the latest Atomos flagship monitor/recorder, with lots of functionality built in – not to mention that gloriously bright, 2000 nit, seven-inch screen. That might seem a shade too big for a mirrorless, and in reality it’s more at home on top of a larger camera or at least a mirrorless rigged up with a cage, follow focus, matte box and all the accessories. But it’s still usable on a bare mirrorless body if you want. With the latest Atomos processing engine, the device supports higher frame rates and resolutions, and is capable of Raw up to 4K/120p via HDMI or SDI and 8K ProRes Raw up to 12-bit in 30p. Most people buy an Atomos device for unlocking the highest- quality footage from their camera. Output 10-bit, or even Raw signal (if your camera allows), and the Shogun records it as Apple ProRes Raw. As a monitor, the touchscreen is very bright, but there’s no nasty glare. To help get your composition, focus and exposure spot on, there are adjustable waveforms, peaking, false colour and frame guides. The vast real estate on the screen is a huge benefit when shooting on location as you can get a good look at what’s going on. Simple navigation of the menus is possible with the responsive touchscreen. Or, use your smartphone and the free AtomRemote app to view and adjust the monitor. Alongside HDR monitoring and Raw recording, there’s a loop-through 12G-SDI in and out with an option to activate SDI Raw and send a signal “The beauty of this new model is its connectivity – it can turn almost any camera into a device that supports cloud- based workflows”

to multiple devices. It has Wi-Fi 6, Gigabit Ethernet, Bluetooth LE and USB-C connection, too. As a stand-alone monitor, it’s a decent upgrade from the old Shogun. But the beauty of this new model is its connectivity, especially with Atomos Cloud and Adobe’s Frame.io software (included with Adobe Creative Cloud). The Shogun Connect can turn almost any camera into a device that supports cloud-based workflows. This means that whenever you shoot, your high-res file is recorded onto the SSD and a low-res version uploaded to Frame.io, where it can be instantly accessed by an editor. That media can be used directly in Adobe Premiere Pro or downloaded and worked on with any NLE, then replaced with the master files later. Atomos Cloud also grants easy streaming with Facebook and YouTube, and the Shogun Connect works as a touchscreen switcher for livestreaming direct. The new Shogun makes the most of Atomos AirGlu built-in wireless timecode to sync cameras on-set, but we only had one Connect unit so couldn’t try that! In a future test, we’ll delve more into the streaming, connection and multicamera features. But as it stands, the Shogun Connect is the best seven- inch monitor Atomos has ever made – and will set you up for a future of cloud-connected workflows.
