Nikon’s newest hybrid
The Z 50II goes after content creators with advanced features for photo and video NIKON’S LATEST CAMERA release is further evidence of its efforts to tap into the burgeoning content creation market – a trend we are seeing across the industry. In contrast to the recently released Z 6III, the new Z 50II aims to attract entry-level users by offering an affordable gateway into the Nikon ecosystem. The Z 50II shares the same 20.8-megapixel APS-C sensor as its predecessor; however, it has enjoyed a processor upgrade to the top-end Expeed 7 chip that can be found in the Z 9 flagship model. As such, it offers some interesting new features. In addition to the ability to detect and track a variety of subjects such as animals and vehicles, the Z 50II features a new AF-A setting, which automatically switches the camera from single to continuous AF when subject movement is detected. Another addition is a Pre-Release Capture feature, which shoots full-size images at 30fps for up to one second before the shutter is released. These new features are undoubtedly handy for photographers of any level, but they paint a strong picture of one of this camera’s key aims: to make photography more accessible. When it comes to displays, the Z 50II enjoys a new 2.36m-dot EVF, which Nikon claims is roughly twice as bright as that of the original Z 50. Outside, the camera features a larger 3.2-inch touchscreen with a video- friendly vari-angle movement; which brings us neatly to the video side of the spec sheet. This camera has been designed to appeal to content creators and boasts video features to support that aim. It’s possible to record

EDITOR’S LETTER PETE TOWNSHEND
And just like that it’s nearly winter, but what an autumn it has been! Ask any normal person for their thoughts on this time of year, and they’ll likely respond with grumpy mutterings about having to put the heating on or how depressing it is now the clocks have changed. Ask a photographer on the other hand – especially a landscaper – and you’ll have a very different conversation. Beautiful misty mornings, crisp afternoons and golden hour at a reasonable time of day all combine with a spectacular display of colour to turn this time of the year into a dream, for Northern Hemisphere shooters at least. My apologies to any of our readers south of the equator who may be feeling left out – but at least you have the buzz of spring to enjoy. While we have all been busy taking photos, the industry has been busy launching the gear we use to do it. We’ve had new products from Leica, Fujifilm, Canon, Nikon and Tamron to name a few. There have also been some fantastic competitions in the news. Whether calling for entries or announcing winners, they have been as varied as they are inspiring. You can see for yourself in our news
You’ll also find the usual tests, with the Canon EOS R5 Mark II and Leica D-Lux 8 cameras put through their paces, along with the Summit Creative Tenzing 50L adventure backpack evaluated for usability. On top of all that, we have a three-page Christmas gift guide to make sure you are all set for the festive period. Whether you’re buying for a loved one or treating yourself, there’s something there to suit most needs. Our next issue will hit the shelves on 21 January 2025, by which time Christmas will be a distant memory. Therefore, I want to take this opportunity to wish you every happiness over the festive period. Thanks for all your support this year and watch out for some exciting developments in 2025!

Fujifilm updates XF16-55mm f/2.8
One of the key changes in this version is a reduction in weight, with the lens now about 37% lighter than its predecessor, bringing its weight down to 410g. The new glass is further evidence of Fujifilm’s efforts to appeal to more videographers, introducing a de-clickable aperture ring. Focus breathing has also been minimised. Weather resistance continues to be a key feature, with the lens offering dust, water and low-temperature resistance. It will be available from 28 November 2024 priced at £1149. fujifilm-x.com
Fujifilm has released a new version of its widely used large-aperture standard zoom lens. The XF16- 55mm f/2.8 R LM WR II offers a constant maximum aperture of f/2.8 across its zoom range, from 16mm to 55mm (24mm to 84mm in full- frame equivalent). It features 16 elements in 11 groups, including four aspherical elements and extra-low dispersion glass – as well as an updated AF system, utilising a linear motor for faster and quieter focusing. Fujifilm has quoted speeds as fast as 0.02 seconds under specific conditions.
Canon’s triple whammy of hybrid lenses
It also supports Canon’s optional RF extenders and Power Zoom Adapters (PZ-E2 and PZ-E2B). Both of these can be operated remotely through EOS Utility apps or over IP, providing options for more controlled shooting. The RF 50mm f/1.4L VCM is a lighter alternative to Canon’s RF 50mm f/1.2L USM. The RF 24mm f/1.4L VCM is about 20% lighter than the EF equivalent and includes a rear filter holder to expand creative options. It’s designed for durability in challenging conditions, consistent with Canon’s L-series specifications. canon.co.uk
Canon has expanded its RF lens line-up with three new hybrid models for photography and video. The RF 70- 200mm f/2.8L IS USM Z, RF 50mm f/1.4L VCM and RF 24mm f/1.4L VCM lenses are the latest additions. What is New For Old cover? New For Old cover means that if your equipment is stolen, lost or accidentally damaged within the period set out on your policy, you’re covered for the cost of replacing it with a brand-new version of the same make or model (or a similar one if it is no longer available). An important thing to note is that you’ll only get replacement gear to the value of the sum insured – that is why it’s so important to keep this updated on your policy. If you don’t, your insurance company will calculate your claim settlement based on the price paid, less depreciation, sum insured and/or market value. The Insurance Emporium’s policies come with four years New For Old as standard, which means the insured item must be less than

four years old from the date of manufacture to qualify for this type of cover. However, the company also offers New For Old for life as an optional benefit, allowing the item to be claimed for up to the sum insured amount on the policy, regardless of how old it is. Why is it important to update the sum insured? Your insured amount should match the current cost of replacing your equipment, otherwise New For Old won’t apply. For example, say you insured your camera for £1000 a few years ago, but now that model costs £1500 to replace; if your camera is then stolen but the sum insured hasn’t been updated, you would only get up to the £1000 it is insured for. It’s your responsibility to update the sum insured on your policy, which you can do at any time – although it’s best to make changes to your policy at the time of renewal as changes made mid-term could incur an admin charge. A frame changer from WhiteWall WhiteWall’s Changeable Magnetic Frame offers the ultimate hassle-free framing solution that combines flexibility and style Hassle-free framing
“This new system offers a fresh take on framing that combines high- end design with PICTURE THE WALLS of your home. If you’re a photographer (which we’re guessing you are), you probably have at least one of your own photos mounted in a frame somewhere. If that’s the case, and you’re anything like us, that same photo has probably been there for a lot longer than it should have. But why? For us, changing it is just not worth the hassle. First you have to battle with the fixings on the back, then take the frame apart and work blindly to position it, only to put it back together and end up with a wonky image, or it slips down after a couple of days. WhiteWall’s Changeable Magnetic Frame changes that completely. This new system provides a fresh take on framing that seamlessly combines high- end design with effortless, user- friendly practicality.
The Changeable Magnetic Frame is held together by magnetic strips on the inside of the frame section. These securely hold the photo, backing and glass in place, but at the same time, make switching your photos as easy as pressing gently on the glass, lifting off the frame and popping in a new print. The beauty of doing all this from the front is that you can see what you’re doing at every step, ensuring perfect placement. Furthermore, once together, each piece stays dust- free and precisely positioned within the frame thanks to a secure fit that ensures the artwork sits exactly where it should. dogs and weather. As a Brit, this is one of my favourite features of the year – all that’s missing is the traffic!
WORDS BY PETE TOWNSHEND THIS EDITION’S INCREDIBLE images focus on arguably the two most popular conversation starters:
Weather Photographer of the Year 2024
FEW THINGS CAN affect your mood like the weather. We’ve all been there: sullenly playing scrabble on the hotel balcony as the thunder rumbles; frantically scraping the ice from your windscreen when you’re already five minutes late; or tending to a soggy barbecue under an umbrella. It’s not all bad. As photographers, we know the countless positives the weather can bring. This could be beautiful morning light, a misty landscape or the magic of the aurora. Weather Photographer of the Year celebrates these moments with a top prize of £5000 – and this year there was fierce competition, with entries from 84 countries. Wang Xin from China won with a picture of rare atmospheric sprites over Shanghai. UK-based Andy Gray took second with his frosty Derwent Valley landscape, followed by fellow Brit Jamie Russell with his striking rainbow over The Needles.

Dog Photography Awards 2024
Of all genres, dog photography is one of the most accessible. For many of us, the opportunity is staring us in the face… with head tilted and tongue hanging out. But on top of all the goofiness, there is a more serious side to having a dog: the unconditional love, loyalty and companionship that help countless people around the world in myriad ways. These awards celebrate not only the talented people behind the cameras, but the beautiful pooches in front of them. The winners were selected from 1700 entries across more than 60 countries. Rhea Nellen’s striking photo of Kooki the white shepherd bagged first place in the portrait category, but our favourite has to be Donna Victor’s brilliant image, which finished second in the studio category. Thinking of buying used this Christmas? Here’s five things you need to know Guide to buying used this Christmas
WHETHER YOU’RE UPGRADING your photography gear or getting a gift for a loved one, buying used can be a smart, sustainable choice. It reduces waste and lowers the environmental impact of production while potentially saving you loads of money. What’s not to like? Here is a guide to making the most of your used purchase this Christmas, along with some practical tips for ensuring you buy the right camera from a reliable seller. 1. Do your research When buying used, thorough research is key. Start by reading reviews on the camera models you’re considering, paying close attention to the features and specifications that best match your needs. Whatever you or the recipient wants to shoot, it’s important to choose a model that aligns with those specific requirements. You also need a clear idea of its market value to ensure you know a good deal when you see one. At MPB, every product page features detailed descriptions of specs and features, so you can be sure the gear is right for your needs. Furthermore, with the market
knowledge MPB has gained from recirculating over 570,000 products a year, the price is always accurate. 2. Inspect condition Undoubtedly, the most important factor in buying used is the gear’s condition. After all, a camera with a big scratch across the LCD could still be described as ‘in working order’. Always choose a seller that makes it easy to check the condition of the gear you want to buy. Are the images decent enough to show cosmetic blemishes that might affect your enjoyment? Are you satisfied that the equipment is in good working order? At MPB, all cameras are carefully inspected and given condition ratings by a team of seasoned experts, allowing you to confidently gauge their level of use. Clear and detailed images provide a good picture of the condition before you make a purchase. 3. Check accessories Imagine receiving a new camera, excitedly opening the box ready to get out shooting, only to discover there is no battery included. Not only does this significantly affect the value, it’s also really annoying.
“It can sometimes feel like you need a six-shooter and a cowboy hat, but it doesn’t have to be like the Wild West”
5. Buy from a reputable seller When stepping into the used camera gear market, it can sometimes feel like you need a six-shooter and a cowboy hat, but it doesn’t have to be like the Wild West. By choosing a trusted seller, not only can you get a guarantee on the gear’s condition, but also additional assurances that give you peace of mind. Take MPB, for example. It’s a highly rated seller with a track record of over a million satisfied customers who have rated it five stars on Trustpilot. Each product it sells has been subject to rigorous checks by expert technicians and comes with a free six-month warranty. And in the unlikely event you are not completely satisfied, you can make the most of hassle-free returns. Like what you hear? Go to MPB’s website to see what treats you can find to fit your budget and needs.
From battery chargers to lens caps, knowing the full list of included accessories before you buy ensures you’re getting good value and aren’t left needing to purchase additional items separately.
It’s also worth checking if any of the accessories included are original or third party, as this can make a difference in quality and compatibility. MPB simplifies this process by providing a full list of accessories through a simple drop-down system. This means that you can view the included accessories quickly and easily from the listings screen, without even having to load a product page. 4. Consider trading in You know that old camera and lens gathering dust in the back of the cupboard? We get it, you made some wonderful photos with it five years ago – but think of all the amazing photos you could make in the next five years if you trade it in to help get that upgrade. Trading in is not only a way to reduce your spend but also a sustainable decision that contributes to the recirculation of used gear. Doing it with MPB couldn’t be more straightforward. Simply add your old gear’s model and condition at checkout, and you’ll receive an instant quote in which its trade-in value is automatically deducted from the cost of your new gear. All you need to do is click a button and it’s done.
PEACE OF MIND Buyers can be assured that every product sold by MPB has been through a rigorous checking process by expert technicians – and everything is protected by a free six-month warranty with hassle-free returns if required

allow the photographer to see how their scene looks in real time. While there are plenty of options out there, we reviewed the Neewer CB200C back in issue 117, finding it to be a great choice. It’s a powerful tool packed with customisation options, and all at a reasonable price.
Are you or your recipient thinking about taking the first steps in studio photography or video? A key element in that area is lighting, so why not make Christmas a little brighter with a continuous LED? Continuous LEDs are the perfect place to start in lighting because they
WORDS BY PETE TOWNSHEND
WHETHER YOU LIKE it or not, Christmas is around the corner. We’re already seeing some TV ads and by the time you read this, Mariah Carey’s voice is likely to be ringing out across the airwaves on repeat, a minor celebrity will be on their way to your local town for the big switch- on and you’ll be thinking you should probably at least get your hair sorted for the work Christmas party. With so much excitement, it’s easy to forget about what makes Christmas so special: the act of giving. Here at PN , we’ve spent more Christmas Eves than we care to admit frantically rushing between shops, sifting through the leftovers. That’s why we’ve put together a Christmas gift guide to ensure that doesn’t happen to you. Whether you’re shopping for a friend, a family member or treating yourself, all the inspiration you need is right here.
Of all the camera accessories out there, the tripod is probably one of the best known, for good reason. The opportunities it presents for photographers from all genres is remarkable – allowing us to use movement for creative effects, shoot in low-light conditions or The solid choice Tripods
capture the awesome beauty of the starry night sky. However, tripods need to strike the right balance between sturdiness, weight, size and looks. Following our First test in PN 113, we think the Benro Cyanbird gets it just right.
Something to treasure Framed prints
There’s nothing like seeing one of your own photos in print. The colour, the detail, the finish – it’s a magical experience. The best bit is you’ll be able to look at it as long as you can see. No devices, software updates or electricity needed. Such longevity and tangibility makes a very special gift for any photographer, so why not get one of their favourite photos printed in all its glory? Better still, get it framed. Whitewall is a processing lab that offers end-to-end services. It prints out photos and also offers a huge range of frames and photo gifts that ensure they’re presented beautifully.

available for a one-off fee, so once you’ve paid for it, it’s yours. This puts editing software very much back on the table for gifting. Add to that Affinity Photo’s very comprehensive range of features – plus its entire suite of programmes spanning editing, designing and publishing – and you’re bound to make someone very happy.
With most image-editing software requiring a monthly subscription, it doesn’t jump out as the ideal present. No matter how capable the programme is, receiving an ongoing financial commitment for Christmas is probably not what most people have in mind in terms of presents. That’s where Affinity Photo comes in. This capable software is
