AWARD APATHY
T he Oscars, the Emmys, the Grammys and the Golden Globes: there is no shortage of award shows to satiate movie, music and television lovers. Generally broadcast live from Los Angeles, these events are famous for their red carpet fashion, musical performances, acceptance speeches and – every now and then – scandals. The future of award shows is uncertain. Though ratings are down from five years ago, the pandemic may only be partially to blame. The consensus is that these ceremonies have lost their spark; what was once exciting is now droll and predictable. But there are other variables in play: namely the competition from simultaneous broadcasts with sporting events, best-of clips going straight to social media and audiences being spoilt for choice. Whatever the reason, we’re here to run the numbers.
Award shows have arguably seen better days, with ratings down from a decade ago – but up from the peak of the pandemic. Is it time to roll up the red carpets?
