GOOD COMMS IS GOOD STRATEGY

Riedel is using its sports comms expertise to bring together the complex world of esports production

SHANGHAI ESPORTS Earlier this year, Riedel began working with Shanghai-based audio company TechSound on Chinese esports productions. TechSound designs and operates advanced player communications systems based on Riedel’s Artist digital matrix intercom system, Performer partyline system and MAX headsets. The Riedel gear enables Voice over IP (VoIP) remote production workflows for esports events across China, providing communications among players, and among the remote production staff and on-site referees. Inspired by the specific demands and requirements of esports, TechSound has adopted an IP-centred approach to intercom and remote production, and has also been using Riedel to design communications solutions for music, corporate and exhibition events, as well as traditional sports. The Riedel Artist system integrates with audio routers and consoles in any remote broadcast production workflow. Its modular architecture provides a range of connectivity options, enabling the use of comms systems from various providers without the need for human interfacing.

in full throttle! That ought to keep those fighters off our backs!” or a lieutenant ordering, “Lay down a suppressing fire with incinerators and fall back to the APC!” or even the simple yet classic: “Yahoo!”? Communications tech is what keeps a combat team coordinated and united – but comms also make for better drama. In the world of professional gaming they’re not only an essential part of team strategy, but from the very beginning verbal chat has been an important part of gameplay. With esports now the subject of large- scale, multimedia stadium broadcasts, internal communications need to be as coordinated and seamless as that of a major combat operation. Riedel Communications has specialised in comms since the late 1980s, and as early as 1993 was supplying production communications systems for Formula One. As a go-to comms supplier for most of the world’s big sporting events, it was natural that the company would find a prominent place in the comms-heavy esports space.

BIG CROWD IN TONIGHT Esports is taking the world by storm, not just as a participatory activity, but as a spectator sport

“TechSound is one of the few companies in China using VoIP systems for remote production of esports competitions,” says Gao Jian, general manager at Riedel China. “The evolving technical requirements of esports have become a key driver of China’s comms industry, and we’re pleased to be supporting TechSound in achieving an agile workflow for esports competitions across multiple geographic sites.” For a recent international esports event held in northern China, the Riedel Artist solution enabled TechSound to integrate intercom, wireless and walkie-talkie systems from different rental vendors and manufacturers into one communications system. TechSound also manages semi- permanent seasonal systems, which
