IT WOULD BE HELD ON THE ROOF LIKE SIMBA FROM THE LION KING TO GET THAT ONE LITTLE BIT OF SIGNAL
QUESTIONABLE CONNECTIVITY Getting the content is one thing, getting it out there is another. With deserts, jungles and wide expanses of barren roads to contend with, the fact the team could get videos and posts out regularly was a feat in itself. “With every country, the first mission would be to get a SIM card,” says Karp. “We would research beforehand which has the best coverage of each area and get a mix of SIM cards to split between the group. “I also had my personal Garmin Inreach Mini 2; that was our satellite phone for the entire mission. Russ kept it on hand when he was running – all the contacts were uploaded on there as soon as we got new SIM cards, so he could text us if need be.” Despite this, at times there was only so much the team could do. “At the time, Starlink hadn’t rolled out properly in Africa and the satellite internet companies are extremely expensive. Sometimes we just had to accept it. There were some days we would literally park up next to the road where we would have one or two bars of signal. The laptop would be inside on a hotspot to a phone, being held by someone on the roof like Simba from The Lion King – just trying to get that one little bit of signal.”
